AirPrint allows iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Mac users to wirelessly print photos, emails, web pages, and documents simply and easily.
There’s no software to download, no drivers to install, and no cables to connect. With just a few taps, you can go from viewing something on the screen, to holding a printed copy.
Many Ricoh multifunction products (MFPs) and printers with a GWNX controller or later, are AirPrint-enabled. This means they’ve received specific AirPrint certification from Apple Inc, and can be automatically ‘discovered’ by the Printer Options within iOS, over a wireless network.
What you see is what you print
If you can view it on your iPhone, chances are you can print it with AirPrint. AirPrint works with built in apps including Safari, Mail, Photos, iWork, and PDFs in iBooks. Depending on what you print, AirPrint adjusts accordingly.
For example, if you want to print a picture and your printer has a photo paper tray, AirPrint automatically selects photo paper. You can also line up multiple print jobs and manage your print queue.
How does it work?
Once the requirements have been established, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch users simply select the AirPrint-enabled printer, or MFP, from the iOS Printer Options. AirPrint also enables Mac users with OS X10.7 or later, to print to the device without the need to install the PostScript option.
The Ricoh device will be found on the Wi-Fi network using Bonjour—without the need to install a driver or configure the printer settings.
To use AirPrint
- Open an app that supports AirPrint—such as the built-in Safari, Mail, or Photos app
- Tap the Share icon, and select Print
- Select one of the automatically discovered printers and Print.
Note: AirPrint is not supported when user authentication is activated.
Wireless printing using Bonjour
Using Apple’s Bonjour networking technology, the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, allow automatic discovery of devices on IP networks, without the need to manually enter IP addresses or configure domain name system (DNS) servers.
Note: For all wireless LAN configurations—whether ad-hoc or via infrastructure mode—the Ricoh Wireless LAN option must be installed on the printer or MFP.
Target market
With so many people carrying an iPhone, iPad or both, this feature is very popular.
While this is a sought-after feature right across all vertical markets, it is particularly appropriate for low-volume Pay For Print (PFP) and retail customers whose clients walk in off the street, requiring immediate printouts.
Benefits for the customer
- AirPrint is convenient for executives and mobile business people who need to print tickets, photos, and emails, safely and quickly from their mobile phone or iPad
- There’s no software to download, no drivers to install, and no cables to connect—customers will appreciate getting printouts with minimal setup time
- Easy to use and easy to install—no need to refer to complex instructions—the iPhone or iPad will automatically find the AirPrint-enabled devices on the Wi-Fi network
Because all the printing takes place in the background, there’s no waiting around, so users can start printing and go right back to flicking through photos and surfing the internet.
